Zhangjiakou is located in the northwest of Hebei Province and is an important hub city connecting Beijing Tianjin Hebei and Jin Ji Meng. The total area of the city is 36800 square kilometers, with 6 districts (Qiaodong District, Qiaoxi District, Xuanhua District, Xiahuayuan District, Wanquan District, Chongli District) and 10 counties (Zhangbei County, Kangbao County, Guyuan County, Shangyi County, Weixian County, Yangyuan County, Huai'an County, Huailai County, Zhuolu County, Chicheng County) under its jurisdiction, and a permanent population of 4.099 million people (2022 data). In 2022, the total regional GDP of the city reached 177.52 billion yuan.
Zhangjiakou is the main venue for the snow sports events of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, known as the "Pearl Beyond the Great Wall" and the "backyard of Beijing". It is also a national renewable energy demonstration zone, a capital water conservation functional zone, and an ecological environment support zone.
